ARCOS-1, one of the longest hybrid systems in the world
Project task: a repeaterless telecommunications system of 9000 kilometers in length is to connect 15 Caribbean countries as a turnkey system.
Project solution: one-stop shop: As the consortium manager, NSW was responsible for implementing the Americas Region Caribbean Optical Ring System (ARCOS-1). NSW demonstrated its skill in two areas: product quality of the submarine cable system technology and the unmatched capability to manage complex projects.
ARCOS-1 is one of the largest repeaterless cable systems in the world. A hybrid submarine cable system that is 9000 kilometers long with two additional repeatered sections that are each 1000 kilometers in length. The high number of fibers, high bandwidth and sections up to 400 kilometers in length -- all come from the demanding implementation requirements. NSW handled these demands by the combined use of MINISUB™ fiber-optic cables, specified enclosure design and the very flexible production capabilities of NSW. Corning provided first-class optical repeater and fiber technology and additional suppliers provided the transmission technology.
NSW managed the entire ARCOS-1 project from the initial phase including project planning and financing to execution, installation and system acceptance. A project of this size needs a very well-rehearsed project team: geologists, engineers, cable specialists, business economists, quality representatives and the entire production plant has to overcome the challenges that accompany such a project every day. Short reaction times, freethinking approaches, coordination, supervision and continuous communication with the customers require an extremely high commitment. NSW has been ready and able to do this for over 100 years.
