The consortium of Fujitsu and NSW wins contract for high-bandwidth optical-fiber sub-marine cable system

1/28/2009

Nordenham/Germany, January 28, 2009

PT TELEKOMUNIKASI INDONESIA, Tbk (“PT TELKOM”) awarded the consortium composed of Fujitsu Limited, leading provider of customer-focused Information Technology (IT) and communications solutions for the global marketplace, and Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH (NSW), a worldwide leading manufacturer in the submarine telecommunication and power cables industry, to supply and install on a turnkey basis its prestigious submarine cable project called JaKa2LaDeMa with a value beyond US$100M.

This is the first direct, high-bandwidth, optical-fiber, submarine cable system for the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, as well as Java, Bali and Lombok.

With completion scheduled in the first quarter of 2010, JaKa2LaDeMa will significantly enhance capacity between the islands supporting upgradeable transmission facilities that provide Internet, e-commerce, video, data and voice services.

Fujitsu will provide its state of the art terminal equipment, repeaters, branching units system integration and associated services in this project. The repeaters shall be integrated into the repeatered cables from NSW.

Gensei Katano, Group Vice President, Submarine Networks of Fujitsu commented: “It is an extreme pleasure that Fujitsu is able to contribute to the construction of significant network infrastructure in Indonesia, being one of the fast growing market in the world. I believe this win is attributable to our robust network portfolio, as well as our strong commitment to Indonesia. We will continue to work closely with NSW for the successful delivery of state of the art submarine system to PT TELKOM.”

NSW will manufacture the cable and provide other required services like site survey, marine installation and civil works.

Rudolf Stahl, Managing Director at NSW, says: “We are very proud that PT Telkom has awarded the consortium this project. This new order reiterates the confidence our customers have in our capability and expertise in providing high-end quality products and solutions. It also confirms the effectiveness of the Fujitsu – NSW team to provide state of the art, technically superior and cost-effective submarine cable systems to our customers. The resulting solution is the outcome of Fujitsu’s wealth of experience and proven repeater technology and NSW’s success in delivering innovative, technologically superior and cost-effective submarine cable solutions.

This project which combines both repeatered and repeaterless cable supply and installation has finally put a confirmative seal on declaring the consortium of Fujitsu and NSW a natural choice for full turnkey submarine cable systems on a world wide basis.”

Fujitsu's optical submarine repeater is of the latest design, fully qualified and the most reliable in the industry. In fact, Fujitsu has supplied more than 2,500 repeaters and has never experienced a single failure of a repeater in commercial service in almost 40 years of its submarine networks operating worldwide.

The fiber-optic submarine cable best suited for this project is NSW's MINISUB repeatered and unrepeatered cable family. The outstanding features of this cable system are its compact and robust design that will secure excellent performance, cable handling, laying and recovery characteristics. In accordance with the customer requirements, the cable will be delivered in the following constructions: lightweight, lightweight protected, single-armored and double-armored.
